Two police officers were assaulted by a group of football fans at a train station as they moved to make an arrest.

British Transport Police (BTP) are appealing for information about the incident on September 6 which involved fans travelling to Edinburgh following a game in Perth earlier in the day.

BTP said that once the train arrived at Stirling, police moved to arrest a man who had allegedly been abusive to other officers on board the train from Perth.

A large group of football fans surrounded the officers and assaulted them as they made the arrest, BTP said.

They then left the scene and boarded a train to Edinburgh Park railway station.

BTP said: “Detectives believe that there were many people on the station platform that may have seen the incident, and are urging them to come forward to support the investigation.”

St Johnstone recorded a 2-1 win over Hibernian in the match on Sunday.

Anyone with information is asked to contact BTP by texting 61016 or by calling 0800 40 50 40, quoting reference 146 of September 3 – the incident reference is dated September 3 as it refers to a log made in advance for the football policing operation.

Those with information can also contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 where anonymity can be maintained.
