John Swinney said Scotland’s win against Haiti in the World Cup is “seismic”.
The Scottish First Minister, who watched the game in Boston, said he was “ecstatic” as the men’s national team finished their first World Cup game in 28 years with a one-nil victory.
He also met Prime Minister of Haiti Alix Didier Fils-Aimé ahead of the match.
During his visit to Boston, Mr Swinney met some of the thousands of Scotland football fans who have travelled to the US to watch Steve Clarke’s side.
On Friday evening, he was joined by actor Gerard Butler and singer Clare Grogan at a gala event in the Massachusetts capital.

Mr Swinney said: “This is a seismic moment for Scotland which could pave the way for the squad to reach the knockout stages of the World Cup for the first time.
“I am absolutely ecstatic and I know people the length and breadth of Scotland will be jubilant and united in joy at this landmark win.
“I know I speak for everyone in Scotland when I say we could not be prouder of the team for what they have achieved so far.”
He continued: “It was an honour to be in Boston to witness this historic moment on behalf of the people of Scotland and share it with Tartan Army fans from around the world.
“The fans have once again showcased their famous warmth and openness to the world.
“The world is watching Scotland, so let’s make history.”
