A popular winter light show at Edinburgh Castle has been cancelled after six years as organisers said it is “no longer sustainable”.
Historic Environment Scotland (HES) announced on Thursday that the Castle of Light event will not be going ahead this year.
The event has been held every year during the festive period since 2019, with the exception of 2020 due to Covid-19.
It was previously marketed as the UK’s largest annual projection show and an immersive light and sound experience set against the landmark building.

However, organisers said Castle of Light requires “very substantial planning, operational and financial commitment from HES teams across the organisation”.
“The event is also highly weather dependent. High winds and storms have caused cancellations in previous years, leading to large numbers of refunds, additional staff time, and financial uncertainty,” a statement from HES said.
“When all of these factors are considered together, the event is no longer sustainable for HES and the decision was taken by executive leadership not to extend the contract for Castle of Light.”
Organisers said they will be taking the chance to explore “new Christmas offers” at Edinburgh Castle, and investing in improving other festive events, decorations, family activities and Christmas afternoon teas.
“We understand the role Castle of Light has played in the winter season,” a statement from HES said.
“Edinburgh Castle continues to be one of Scotland’s leading visitor attractions, contributing significantly to the city’s year-round, visitor economy.
“This decision is about ensuring that the events we deliver are sustainable, represent value for the public, and that we use our resources in the most responsible way. We remain committed to working with the council and city partners on future activity, as part of Edinburgh’s wider visitor offer.”
