A fundraiser in memory of a man who died after being assaulted in central Glasgow has so far raised more than £22,000.

Daniel Colrain, 21, suffered serious injuries in the incident in Royal Exchange Square, Glasgow, at about 3.05am on Sunday.

He was taken to hospital but died the following day.

Staff at The Old Smiddy bar, where Mr Colrain worked, set up a Justgiving page in the hope of raising £2,000 to “support Daniel’s family and assist with his funeral and memorial arrangements”.

By Wednesday evening the appeal had raised £22,320 from more than 1,000 individual donations, meeting the target 11 times over.

In a message on the Justgiving page Mr Colrain’s bereaved colleagues said they are “completely heartbroken” by his loss.

“To know Daniel was to experience his warmth and kindness first hand,” the message read.

“Over the past three years at The Smiddy, he built wonderful friendships with every member of our staff and became a cherished part of our close-knit group.

“He knew all of our regulars by name, chatted with them for hours, and was a beloved presence in the community where he grew up.

“He brought so much light to our team and will be dearly, dearly missed.”

One comment left by a donor read: “There are no words to bring Daniel’s friends and family solace at this time, but know that his life mattered and he whose name is spoken never dies. Sending so much love.”

Another read: “Thoughts and prayers to the family and friends of Daniel R.I.P.”

On Wednesday, Police Scotland said a 19-year-old man had been arrested in connection with Mr Colrain’s death and that inquiries are ongoing.

Another 21-year-old sustained minor injuries in the same incident and police said a 20-year-old has been arrested and charged in connection with this.

The 20-year-old will appear in court in due course.

Officers also arrested a 19-year-old man over the disturbance but he has been released pending further inquiries.

Chief Inspector Stephen McManus previously said he understood that the incident will be concerning for the community but assured residents that specialist officers are carrying out extensive inquiries.

“Increased patrols will be carried out in the area and anyone with any concerns or information can approach these officers,” Mr McManus said.

Detective Inspector Jonny MacKinnon, of Greater Glasgow CID, previously said: “It is vital we get answers for Daniel’s family, so I would ask that anyone with any information, and has yet to speak to officers, contact us on 101, quoting incident number 0494 of Sunday October 4 2026.”
