Hearts supporters have said they are confident their side can win the Scottish Premiership, after a dramatic night meant the title race will be decided at the weekend.

As Hearts fans poured out of Tynecastle after their victory against Falkirk, there was anger at a last-minute penalty in Celtic’s game against Motherwell.

Celtic’s win means the William Hill Premiership winner will now be determined in a crucial match in Glasgow on Saturday, when the Jambos travel to Celtic Park.

Following games last weekend, Derek McInnes’s Hearts side and Martin O’Neill’s Celtic became the only teams in contention for the league title.

If Hearts claim the trophy it would mark the first time any side other than Rangers or Celtic has won the league since 1985, when Aberdeen won under Alex Ferguson’s management.

It would be the first time in 66 years that Hearts have won the title, sparking jubilation in the west of Edinburgh.

Speaking on Wednesday evening, Hearts fan John Spencer said: “It was a good result, apart from the other game.

“We need to get a draw on Saturday, or go and beat them.”

Asked if he is confident about Saturday’s decider, he said: “Why not? We’ve been top all season. It’s them who should be worried now.”

Couple Andy and Lorraine Kier both said they felt “gutted” at the Celtic v Motherwell score, with Mr Kier adding: “Typical Celtic, typical Glasgow bias. Final-minute penalty…

“But we’ll still win the league, we will still win it.”

David Bell said: “I’m absolutely ecstatic with the Hearts result, and a bit disappointed with the Celtic result.

“They got a last-minute penalty and I haven’t seen it so I can’t comment, but it’s left a wee bit of a sour taste.

“But we can go there on Saturday and we can win, because we’ve beat them at Parkhead already, so keep believing.”

Asked if he is feeling confident, Mr Bell added: “Yes, 100%.”

Friends Alistair and Jim were also at the match.

Alistair said: “We’re still in it, we’re still there, and this club’s in a good position, this club’s owned by its own fans, we’re top of the Scottish league, top of the women’s league, and we’ve won the youth cup, so we’re in a very healthy place.”

Jim joked: “This guy’s rehearsed his lines, hasn’t he?”
