Firefighters worked overnight to battle a large blaze that took hold in a garage in South Lanarkshire.

Large plumes of smoke were seen billowing from the building, which was next to a petrol station, on Bothwell Street in Uddingston at 6pm on Monday.

Six appliances, along with one high-reach vehicle, were sent to battle the blaze at its height, and firefighters left the scene at around 9.30am on Tuesday.

Police closed Bothwell Road during the incident but announced on Tuesday afternoon that it had reopened.

A spokesperson for the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said: “We were alerted at 6.01pm on Monday, April 27, to reports of a commercial building fire on Bothwell Road in Uddingston, Glasgow.

“Operations control mobilised six appliances and a high-reach vehicle to the scene.

“Firefighters worked throughout the evening and overnight to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading to a neighbouring petrol station.

“There were no reported casualties. One occupant of the premises was assessed by the Scottish Ambulance Service but did not require hospital treatment.

“Fire crews left the scene on Tuesday at 9.24am, after ensuring the area was made safe.”

The fire is not being treated as wilful.
