Emergency services were called to reports of a serious assault in the London Road area of Abbeyhill at 06:00.

The injured man was taken to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh.

Police are carrying out inquiries in the area and have appealed to anyone with any information to come forward.

A Scottish Ambulance Service spokesman said: "We dispatched one ambulance and a critical care paramedic to the scene.

"We transported one male patient in his 40s to New Edinburgh Royal Infirmary."
